Keep Newnan Beautiful Tired of looking at trash? Join us as we work together to keep our community clean! Our Mission “To educate, motivate and empower the individuals of Newnan, Georgia, to take greater responsibility for improving our local community environments through litter prevention, beautification, and waste reduction.”
In an age that has seen the onset of computers, cellular phones, and cars that email their owners, how can we say that cleaning up our community is impossible? How can we explain to the children that no one cared enough to take responsibility for the world we live in? How do we justify our actions when it takes less than a minute to put trash in the proper place? If each person picked up one piece of trash each day and stopped littering, our job would be done. Recycling News The crashing economy has claimed another victim and this time it affects recycling. Pratt Industries was the contracted recycling facility for CLM, but they have closed their doors. China was a major purchaser of raw recyclables and they have ceased buying. So, CLM is now taking our recyclable materials to Southeastern Paper Recycling. CLM has also sent the latest numbers on recyclables collected in the city. It averages out to 5 pounds per household. Just know that the more recycling you do the less garbage there is to be hauled to the landfills. So please keep recycling and encourage your neighbors to recycle as well! What you can do to help keep Newnan beautiful: Adopt-A-Street: A wonderful story came to us from one of our adopters. She was out with her children, picking up their adopted street, when her child (age 7) said "You know, if these people (litterbugs) would pick up after themselves, we wouldn't have to do this." Isn't that great? The message is getting through, one mind at a time. If we can just get everyone to think that way... We recruit businesses, groups and individuals to contract with us to keep a specific stretch of roadway picked up. All groups are welcome to adopt a section of a city street! The only requirements are that the area is picked up at least 4 times a year and that a quick report is filed with the Keep Newnan Beautiful office. We provide trash bags and plastic gloves and arrange for pickup of the filled bags. We also post a sign designating the area as adopted by the organization or group and present the group with a proclamation from the Mayor and City Council. Environmental Concerns Hotline Trash finds its way into everything, including our water supply. If you see an illegal dump, please call us at 770.253.1823. We'll get to work right away to clean it up. Join The Great American Cleanup The next Cleanup is Spring, 2010! Check back here later for more details! Every spring, Keep America Beautiful sponsors a Great American Cleanup for the entire United States and the City of Newnan participates in it. It’s a great chance to get the whole community involved in cleaning up the refuse littering our lives! We hold cleanups across the community and will work with specific groups to concentrate on areas that concern them. We also sponsor a Junk Drop Off site, where people can bring their old furniture, appliances and electronics for proper disposal with no dumping fees. The day promises fun and excitement; you never know what you'll find when you start cleaning! Come join us as we make Newnan a cleaner, more beautiful place to live. Waste in Place: Waste in Place is a program developed by Keep America Beautiful for use in education efforts in the schools. We have provided the program to the Coweta County School System and they are currently using it in the REACH program and some elementary classrooms. Waste in Place is a comprehensive program that covers all of the Georgia Curriculum Performance Standards for grades K-6. It’s an incredible program that teaches litter prevention and recycling in a fun, entertaining way. Kids actually enjoy cleaning up their world! We need volunteers to help in the schools, so if you're interested, call Carol. Cigarette Litter Prevention Program: Cigarette butts are an unrecognized source of litter that we are working to eradicate through this program. Many smokers may be wonderful at putting trash in cans, but have never thought of a cigarette butt as something that needs proper disposal. We are working to educate the public, both smokers and non-smokers, that trash is trash, no matter how small! KNB Board Members and Support Staff: The Keep Newnan Beautiful Board Members are: Tom Barron, Jason Brady, Joan Crawford, Donna Dietz, Nathan Lee, Connie Posey, Pamela Prange, Mayra Richardson, Glen Bexley, and Kim Hinely. The City of Newnan Support Staff includes: Mike Furbush, Landscape Architect, Cleatus Phillips, Community Development Director, and Carol Duffey, Executive Director, Keep Newnan Beautiful. Join our volunteer list to help with any of these programs! Just email Carol Duffey or call 678.855.5058 to join now!
