JEFFERSON STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT UPDATE
The City of Newnan continues construction on the Jefferson Street project with road closure beginning on July 21st; the road will remain closed for 2 weeks. The road will be closed to through traffic from South Street to Jefferson Parkway.
The road will re-open, regardless of progress, by the time school is back in session on August 6th. The road will remain open only to local traffic for access to homes and business.
According to the Community Development Director, Cleatus Phillips, “The road is being closed in order to perform a complete pavement rehabilitation, to bring the road up to the proper grade, and to replace a large stormwater culvert. The contractor will be installing signage to alert the traveling public about the road closing. We are asking drivers to plan travel routes accordingly to this street closure,” continues Phillips.
The Jefferson Street Improvement Project began in December 2007. The project starts at East Street and ends at Bullsboro Drive, near the Midas Muffler Center and Publix. The project will include widening of the road, turning lanes, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and drainage improvements.
The Jefferson Street Project is funded by 2007 SPLOST funds. The project cost a little over $1.7 million. The project contractor is Southeastern Site Development of Newnan. The project engineer is from ABE Engineering firm of Athens, Georgia. The project is expected to last until early summer.
