‘Newnan Notes’

By Gina Snider

October 5, 2009

City of Newnan Public Information Officer

There were seven new occupational tax certificates issued by the city. The business names are Hyatt Land Improvement, NMN Enterprises, Inc., Piedmont Surgery Specialists, Signtronix, Unique Hair Salon, Unity Towing and US Tool Grinding, Inc.

Keep Newnan Beautiful encourages residents to consider the following energy-, water- and emissions-reducing solutions as you prepare your yard for the next season. Plant your trees strategically. According to the DOE, just three well-placed trees can offer yearly energy savings of $100 to $250 while absorbing heat-trapping carbon dioxide and reducing storm-water runoff. Landscape for water efficiency. Create natural fences. Trees and bushes can replace fencing and edging made from wood or energy-intensive manufactured materials.Use plants to control pests. For example, sunflowers draw lacewings – native predators of plant-eating aphids. Fertilize naturally. Leave grass clippings and leaves on your lawn or turn them into compost. You can supply nutrients without chemical fertilizers and create less landfill waste.

As part of our Public Education and Outreach, a presentation will be made at a local middle school to promote stormwater education. We will also give out refrigerator type magnets to each sixth grade student in Coweta County that reads “Only Rain Down the Storm drain”.  Through classroom education we hope to not only expose the message to students, but help promote public awareness. These children will learn about environmental issues and therefore become interested and perhaps involved at earlier ages. While these students tell their parents what they learned in school they will be passing on environmental awareness to their parents and throughout the community. For more information contact the Engineering Department or go to www.cleanwatercampaign.com. To report any illegal dumping, please call the City of Newnan Environmental Hotline at 770-253-1823.

Pets are growing ever more popular in today’s society. 71.4 million U.S. households (that’s 62%) own at least one pet according to the 2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey from the American Pet Products Association (APPA). And get this: that’s a boost of 12 percent in just ten years and it shows that pet ownership is at it’s all-time high. Don’t tell Rover, but when it comes to the top pet choice, dogs takes second place. Pet cats hold court at 93.6 million versus 77.5 million for dogs.

The city of Newnan Animal Control Officer would like to remind pet owners, since you go to the doctor regularly—so should your pet. Annual checkups give your veterinarian the chance to notice any developing illness and take care of it right away. Your vet will want to know about your pet’s behavior, eating and exercise habits, and will check her temperature, pulse and respiratory rate. The doctor will also inspect her gums and teeth, heart and lungs, and assess the health of her internal organs. Also, rabies vaccinations are a MUST by law. Please check your pets vet records and make sure this vaccination is current! If it’s been a year or more since your pet has seen a vet, make that appointment today!
