CITY OF NEWNAN TREE COMMISSION ANNOUNCES TREE AWARD WINNERS
The City of Newnan Tree Commission is proud to announce its Tree Awards Winners for 2009.
Projects are nominated in the first quarter of the year, selected in the second quarter of the year, and awarded in the third quarter. A three-foot by five-foot sign is erected and displayed in front of the award winner’s project for approximately one year. Each fall, awards are given the following categories:
· Commercial Category - Landscape Excellence Award.
· Commercial Category - Tree Preservation Excellence Award.
· Residential Category - Landscape Excellence Award.
· Residential Category - Tree Preservation Excellence Award. The 2009 project winners are the following:
· Commercial Category - Landscape Excellence Award:75 Jackson Street – Jim Thomasson and 75 Jackson, LLC Kroger Shopping Center – United Corners, Inc.
· Commercial Category - Tree Preservation Excellence Award: 75 Jackson Street – Jim Thomasson and 75 Jackson, LLC
· Residential Category - Landscape Excellence Award: Woodland Oaks Subdivision – Keith Brady and Woodland Oaks, LLC
· Residential Category - Tree Preservation Excellence Award:
No Award Given This Year 75 Jackson Street was recently constructed at the intersection of Bullsboro Drive, Clark Street, and Jackson Street. The Kroger shopping center is located along Lower Fayetteville Road at Newnan Crossing Boulevard. Woodland Oaks Subdivision, located off of Woodland Drive, offers 15 single family homes.
Cindy Millard, Chairwoman of the Tree Commission, said that “the awards are a way to recognize developments that are devoted to saving trees and providing excellent landscaping. With so many new developments in the community, the awards allow the Tree Commission to thank the residential and commercial developers for their time and effort to ensure that Newnan is a beautiful community.
75 Jackson Street, Woodland Oaks and Kroger are all very deserving of this award. “These developments have done an excellent job in either landscaping or tree preservation,” said Millard. Mike Furbush, the city’s Landscape Architect and staff liaison for the Tree Commission, said, “It was unfortunate that an award was not given to a new residential development for their tree preservation.” Furbush stated that “the Commission would have liked to have given out the award, but did not recognize a worthy recipient. He also noted that the Commission takes the awards very seriously and will not distribute the awards to undeserving projects.”
In 2003, The City of Newnan’s Tree Commission created an awards program to recognize commercial and residential construction projects within the City of Newnan. The annual program acknowledges projects that demonstrate excellence in either landscaping or tree preservation as part of their overall development. Four different projects, two commercial and two residential, are selected each year from a pool of all the construction projects that were substantially completed within the city limits in the previous calendar year.
The Commission is a six member volunteer group and is appointed by City Council. Members of the Tree Commission are Cindy Millard, Laurie Pope, Millie Coggin, Jeanine Jackson, and Audrey Bray.
