‘Newnan Notes’

By Gina Snider

October 26, 2009

City of Newnan Public Information Officer

Main Street is getting ready for the annual Halloween Trick or Treat on the square. "Treat-A-Thon" will be this Friday. The day of giving begins with a Can-A-Thon on Court Square all day, followed by Trick or Treat from 10 am -12 pm. People are asked to bring a can of food for donation to the downtown merchants while they trick or treat. The food donations will go to an area food bank. This is a great way of giving back to the community while enjoying Halloween.

Tickets are going fast to Chubby Checker’s only performance in Georgia! He will perform at The Alamo on Sunday, November 22. Tickets are $75 apiece and are being sold at downtown merchants. A limited number of tickets will be sold. Tickets are also being sold for a chance to win a pair of tickets to Chubby Checker’s performance. These $1 drawing tickets are being sold at Main Street Newnan’s office and downtown merchants. The drawing for those tickets will on November 14. For questions, please call Tina, Main Street Coordinator, at 770-253-8283. .

There were two new occupational tax certificates issued by the city. The business names are Custom Cleaners and Spring Street Interiors, Inc.

The city of Newnan’s Engineering Department would like to thank Newnan High School’s BETA Club, National Honor Society, Environmental Club, Key Club and sponsors for teaming up with city employees in our annual Storm Drain Stencil Project. Each year, with the help of volunteers, we glue decals that read “ONLY RAIN DOWN THE STORM DRAIN” onto storm drain inlets throughout the city. This year we had 21 students, 3 sponsors, and 7 representatives from the City of Newnan. Together we marked 127 storm drains in residential communities near Newnan High School.  It is our hope that this will help to remind the public that dumping anything other than rain into the storm drain can clog the pipes and inlets and cause flooding. Remember, the storm drain system flows directly to our creeks, rivers and lakes.  Illegal dumping can harm the aquatic life and damage our drinking water.  For more information, go to www.cleanwatercampaign.com. To report any illegal dumping, please call the City of Newnan Environmental Hotline at 770-253-1823.

Keep Newnan Beautiful reminds you that mothballs are made of toxic pesticides that have been linked to health problems. Use alternatives that are safer for your family and pets. For an inexpensive and space-saving option, use cedar shavings or blocks. Moths are also repelled by a number of herbs, including cloves, fresh rosemary, eucalyptus, lavender, cinnamon sticks and bay leaves. Place the scented material in cheesecloth bags and stick in pockets or dangle from hangers. It will smell a lot better than those chemical mothballs!

The arrival of Halloween brings fun parties, trick-or-treaters, and lots of delicious candies.   However, some of the same goodies and decorations we humans are fond of can be potentially hazardous to our pets.  The city of Newnan Animal Control Officer offers tips on no no’s for your pet during Halloween. - Halloween treats with chocolate are not appropriate for pets. Depending on the dose ingested, chocolate (bakers, semi sweet, milk and dark) can be potentially poisonous to many animals. In general, the less sweet the chocolate, the more toxic it could be. In fact, unsweetened baking chocolate contains almost seven times more the bromine as milk chocolate. Vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, hyperactivity and increased thirst, urination and heart rate can be seen with the ingestion of as little as 1/4 ounce of baking chocolate by a 10-pound dog.- Candies and gum containing large amounts of the sweetener xylitol can also be toxic to pets, as ingestions of significant quantities can produce a fairly sudden drop in blood sugar, resulting in depression and seizures.  Be sure to keep such products well out of the reach of your pets.- Keep your pet on its normal diet.  Any change of diet, even for one meal, may give your dog or cat severe indigestion and diarrhea.  This is particularly true for older animals that have more delicate digestive systems and nutritional requirements. - Halloween decorative plants such as pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively non-toxic, yet they can potentially cause gastrointestinal upset and may even result in intestinal blockage as well if large pieces are ingested. - Liquid potpourri, commonly used to add pleasant scent to the home during certain holidays, can be hazardous to pets.  Potentially severe damage to the mouth, skin and eyes could result from exposure to both heated and cool liquid product. If you suspect your pet may have become exposed to a potentially toxic product or substance, contact your local veterinarian immediately for assistance.
