In 2009, Coweta County 911, Coweta County Emergency Management and Newnan Utilities entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the roles and responsibilities of each party during the use of the weather sirens during a tornado warning declared by the National Weather Service. The weather sirens will be used to support the warning efforts of the citizens of Newnan, Georgia.

It is understood that Coweta County 911 will:

a. Notify Newnan Utilities Control Room and advise them that Newnan/Coweta County has been placed under a tornado warning by the National Weather Service.

It is understood that Coweta County Emergency Management will:

a. Request that Newnan Utilities activate the weather sirens in the event that the City of Newnan is included in the tornado warning by the National Weather Service.

It is understood that Newnan Utilities will:

a. At the request of Coweta County Emergency Management activate the weather sirens.

b. Activate the weather sirens at their discretion.

The outdoor weather warning sirens are intended to alert people that are outdoors to seek shelter due to hazardous weather conditions. While the sirens can sometimes be heard inside structures, the sound volume can be diminished by the distance, topography, and other variables. Televisions, weather radios or the use of the internet are also beneficial resources for severe weather notifications while inside a structure.

Monthly Testing:

Monthly testing of the sirens is performed at 11am on the first Wednesday of each month by Newnan Utilities. If a weather event is occurring during the normal test time, the tests are rescheduled for the following Wednesday at 11am.

Elderly Woman Beaten Case

Reward Offered

Newnan Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding the person or persons responsible for the beating of an elderly woman.

The Newnan City Council is offering a $5000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. On September 21, 2009, the Newnan Police Department began an investigation intothe assault of a 90 year old woman. The woman, who lives alone, was assaultedin her home at 121 Pinson Street. She was found by friends on the morning of Sept. 21, 2009, who routinely check on her well being.

"I appreciate the Mayor and Council for offering this reward to assist in the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in the assault of the elderly lady on Pinson Street. This occurred in September of 2009 and at present all of our leads have been exhausted, said Newnan Police Chief Douglas ‘Buster' Meadows. I encourage anyone with what they may think to be information to contact us on the Newnan Police Department Tip Line at770-254-2350 or contact Det. Sgt. Rick Mires at 770-254-2355, ext 118." All information will be followed up by an investigator, continues Chief Meadows.

The investigation determined the victim was last seen around 10:00 am on September 20th, by her friends. When they returned to check on her on September 21st,they discovered the front door had been forcibly opened and the woman was foundlying on the floor. She had facial injuries, and her clothes were blood stained.

The investigation developed several "persons of interest", but each of thesepersons were eliminated as suspects. A number of "tips" have been received fromthe public. These tips have been beneficial, but none have lead to a viablesuspect. In an effort to develop additional information, the Newnan City Council now offering a reward of $5000 to anyone that provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the assault.
