Outdoor Weather Warning Sirens

The City of Newnan has eight outdoor weather warning sirens placed in the following locations:

Berry Avenue
Bullsboro Drive
Perry Street
Sprayberry Road
Mary Freeman Road
Lower Fayetteville Road
VC Street
Waterworks Road

In 2009, Coweta County 911, Coweta County Emergency Management and Newnan Utilities entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to establish the roles and responsibilities of each party during the use of the weather sirens during a tornado warning declared by the National Weather Service. The weather sirens will be used to support the warning efforts of the citizens of Newnan, Georgia.

It is understood that Coweta County 911 will:

a. Notify Newnan Utilities Control Room and advise them that Newnan/Coweta County has been placed under a tornado warning by the National Weather Service.

It is understood that Coweta County Emergency Management will:

a. Request that Newnan Utilities activate the weather sirens in the event that the City of Newnan is included in the tornado warning by the National Weather Service.

It is understood that Newnan Utilities will:

a. At the request of Coweta County Emergency Management activate the weather sirens.

b. Activate the weather sirens at their discretion.

The outdoor weather warning sirens are intended to alert people that are outdoors to seek shelter due to hazardous weather conditions. While the sirens can sometimes be heard inside structures, the sound volume can be diminished by the distance, topography, and other variables. Televisions, weather radios or the use of the internet are also beneficial resources for severe weather notifications while inside a structure.

Monthly Testing:

Monthly testing of the sirens is performed at 11am on the first Wednesday of each month by Newnan Utilities. If a weather event is occurring during the normal test time, the tests are rescheduled for the following Wednesday at 11am.

The Spring Taste of Newnan will be held on Thursday, April 22 from 5- 8:30pm. Main Street Newnan is now accepting vendor applications. The applications can be found online at www.mainstreetnewnan.com.

There were eight new occupational tax certificates issued by the city. The business names are Collins Mobile Auto Repair, Dianne Parker & Associates, Inc., FabBrowLash Makeup Studio, Great Styles by MS Salon, LLC, K & R Bonafied Assistance, LLC, Lanier Design Group, Piedmont Heart Group and Seepaino Creative Services.

Come to The Carnegie for the first meeting of the Carnegie Literary Circle book club. This first meeting will be an opportunity to meet new friends and determine what will be the group's first book. The group will also decide on the regular meeting day and time.

"Book discussion groups are a great way to share your love of reading and make new friends" said Media Coordinator Amy Mapel. "It can also encourage people to read more and read different types of books".

Spring time is here and the Engineering Department would like to remind you of some pruning, tree and brush removal, and planting information. Please remember to be careful when working near a creek. Only hand cut small underbrush and minimize tree pruning. Trees and bushes help moderate the temperature of the water; filter pesticides, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment; and help prevent bank erosion. State and local ordinances prohibit clearing of buffers without a permit. For more information contact the Engineering Department at 770.253.2682.

Keep Newnan Beautiful will be at Lowe's this Saturday, April 17^th. We have partnered with the Master Gardeners and the County Extension Service to offer the community information about composting! We will have tables set up outside the Garden Center with information on composting, examples of composting in different stages, and several composting bins for people to look at. We will be available to answer any and all questions you might have. Please stop by and see us!
