The City’s Engineering Department would like to remind you that when doing summer projects it is important to be careful when working with concrete.  Concrete, cement, grout, stucco, plaster and mortar washout wastewater is corrosive and caustic.  The pH of concrete can be over 12, essentially the same as Liquid Drano (R) or other household cleaners.  Concrete washout or rinse water may not be discharged into any water body, on the ground, or stormwater inlet.  Remember, most concrete companies offer sturdy washout bags or containers that may be used to contain the concrete washout.  When selecting you concrete provider, consider companies that provide concrete washout methods, safe removal of the concrete, and preference should be given to those that recycle collected materials.  To report any illegal dumping, please call the City of Newnan Environmental Hotline at 770-253-1823.

Keep Newnan Beautiful has three simple things you can do right now to help the environment:

  • Shut off your computer. 75% of all the electricity used in the house is standby power to keep electronics running. Shut down your computer when not in use, and you can save about $70 a year.
  • Say no to plastic bags. Plastic bags are typically made of polyethylene and can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. Reduce plastic-bag pollution by simply using a cloth or paper bag instead of wasting plastic ones.
  • Check the label. Look for the Energy Star, a rating system by the EPA to find energy-efficient products. Use Energy Star appliances to reduce your utility bill as much as 30%.
The city of Newnan animal control officer gives tips on separation anxiety for pets. When your dog suffers from separation anxiety, leaving the house can be just as stressful for you as it is for him. No one likes to see a beloved pet upset—plus, any time away from home might be spent worrying what kind of mess awaits your return. Will your pooch tear up the sofa? Chew the walls? Pee on the carpet? Shake, drool and bark for hours?Overcoming disorders like separation anxiety takes time, patience and consistency, but it can be done! Don’t wait any longer: take control of your dog’s happiness—and your own—just in time for summer travel season. The next time you drop off Fido at a friend’s house or the boarding kennel, you’ll feel sweet relief knowing that you miss him more than he misses you.
  • Doctor Knows Best
The first step in tackling behavior issues is to rule out any underlying medical problems that might be causing your pet’s behavior. For example, if your pet is urinating in the house, he might be suffering from a urinary tract infection, bladder stones, diabetes or kidney disease.
  • Keep It Mellow
All greetings—hellos and goodbyes—should be conducted in a very calm manner. When saying goodbye, just give your dog a pat on the head, say goodbye and leave. Similarly, when arriving home, say hello to your dog and then don’t pay any more attention to him until he’s calm and relaxed.
  • Dogs Need Jobs
Providing lots of physical and mental stimulation is a vital part of treating many behavior problems, especially those involving anxiety. Exercise can enrich your dog’s life, decrease stress and provide appropriate outlets for normal behavior. Plus, a tired dog doesn’t have much excess energy to burn when he’s left alone!
