Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax is a 1 cent sales tax intended solely for voter approved capital projects and only a County Government can call for a S.P.L.O.S.T. referendum.  In 1992 the first S.P.L.O.S.T. was approved in Newnan & Coweta County.  Our citizens re-authorized S.P.L.O.S.T. issues in 1997, 2002, & 2007, and studies have shown that up to 40% of all S.P.L.O.S.T. revenues come from non-county residents!  Click the link below to see how S.P.L.O.S.T. has enhanced Newnan over the past several years.

City of Newnan Public Information Officer

The city of Newnan Building Department has received plans for a Rock Back Pizza to be located near Taco Mac at 311 Newnan Crossing Bypass. The pizza parlor will include an outdoor patio and approximately 6,210 square feet of space.
Main Street Market Days is this Saturday from 10 – 2pm. With a wide variety of handmade or homegrown products, there is something for everyone. Come shop the courthouse square for homegrown plants and produce, handmade jewelry, soap, artwork, baked goods and more!

There were twelve new occupational tax certificates issued by the city. The business names are Cremation Society of Simplicity, Evening Star Travel, Fauscett Electrical, Gently Used Furniture & Appliances, Internet Connection, Interstate Electric, LLC., Ousley’s Catering Group, LLC, Piedmont Physicians Pediatrics Newnan, RAG Productions, Inc., Ready, Set, Get Fit Boot Camp & Training, Shelnutt Plumbing and Water Works. For more information on tax occupational licenses or city taxes please contact the Finance Department at 770-253-2682.

A friendly reminder from the city Code Enforcement Officer, Matt Camp citizens are allowed three yard sales per calendar year, more than three yard sales, you will need to obtain an occupational tax certificate from the City of Newnan. Citizens are required to register their yard sales with the city.

Several times a year, the Public Works Department receives calls requesting that a creek, or ditch as they are often referred to, be cleaned out. The natural vegetation along the banks of streams, creeks, or any other body of water is referred to as a buffer and is protected by ordinance.  In Newnan, the typical buffer width is 50 feet on either side. The vegetation growing in a buffer may be grass, shrubs and trees, especially if the creek or ditch runs through a landscaped backyard. In more naturalized areas, the vegetation may include weeds, brush and vines such as kudzu.

The ordinance protecting buffers prohibits any significant land disturbance or clearing without a variance. However, the ordinance does provide for thinning or trimming vegetation in such a way as not to impact water quality and aquatic habitat and that a natural canopy remains to sufficiently shade the creek or ditch.
Remember that small creeks and streams feed larger streams and lakes and eventually reach drinking water intakes, so protecting buffers on all streams, no matter how small, protects surface waters and helps replenish groundwater.

Never mow to the edge of a stream; let a buffer develop naturally.

Plant appropriate native vegetation in a buffer zone Do not dump anything in a creek, including grass clipping and other yard waste. Leave natural woody debris in a creek, such as fallen branches.  This provides habitat and food for aquatic life. Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly in your yard and not at all in a buffer. Do not try to change the course of a creek or try to use rocks or other materials to stop stream bank erosion for this may do more harm than good.

Healthy buffers provide a natural habitat for wildlife, provide shade to keep stream water cool and discourage algae growth, stabilize stream banks and prevent erosion, filter stormwater runoff that may contain sediment and chemicals, and slow runoff to help prevent flooding.

The city of Newnan Animal Warden, Cyndi Hoffman reminds pet owners to spay and neuter your pets.
Talk about preventive medicine! Removing the ovaries and uterus of a female dog or cat—otherwise known as spaying—helps prevent breast cancer and pyometra, or infection of the uterus, and stops the animal from going into heat. (Female cats, by the way, can go into heat every 3 weeks!) And ASPCA experts believe that many aggressive behavior problems can be avoided by neutering a male, or removing the testicles, by the age of six months. The surgery also prevents testicular cancer, prostate disease and hernias. Most importantly spaying and neutering a pet helps control pet populations and helps animals from being unwanted.
