‘Newnan notes’

City of Newnan Public Information Officer

The city of Newnan is starting a Pedestrian Safety public awareness campaign named ‘Safe STEP.’ The city will begin conducting an ongoing campaign to remind drivers to look for pedestrians; and to encourage pedestrians to use crosswalks and follow the pedestrian signal indications.

As the city launches “Safe Step”, here is a helpful tip many drivers aren’t sure what to do when they encounter a pedestrian. In 1995 the Georgia legislature changed the crosswalk law such that drivers must “stop and stay stopped” for pedestrians, not just yield to them. Be sure you know the law. “Think of the impact you can make, Stop for Pedestrians.”

Newnan Citizen Academy is back this year, a free six week course provided to city residents, business owners, and property owners, over the age of 18, to educate and inform the citizens of Newnan about every aspect of city government in Newnan.  The course will be an intensive, hands-on program on how city departments operate and how critical decisions are made that affect the quality of life in Newnan.  Participants are given the opportunity to tour city facilities and hear directly from department managers, professional staff, and elected officials.  Gina Snider, the city of Newnan’s Public Information Officer will be the hostess for the Academy. Participants must be willing to commit to the required time for the program.

Registration for the classes begins August 9th and goes through Tuesday, September 7th. The applicants will be chosen first that live within the city limits. Beyond that applicants in the county will be on a first come first serve basis. Please contact Gina Snider at 770-254-2358 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  to register. She would also be the contact for any questions you may have with the academy.

The city of Newnan Animal Warden, Cyndi Hoffman reminds everyone that the new tethering ordinance is in effect. Please make sure that your dog is no longer tethered outside. Also, take this time to check the dog house to make sure it is still the proper size for your dog and that there are not any leaks. Please also make sure and provide fresh cool water for the animal. Check your dog's collar to assure proper size and that an ID tag is attached with current contact information on it. Please check with your veterinarian and verify that your pets’ vaccinations are current. Please call 770-253-2355 for more information on the new ordinance.

Keep Newnan Beautiful wants to encourage you to get involved!  Encourage friends, associates and businesses to recycle and to use and buy recycled goods. Participate in or start a voluntary recycling program with your school, church, or community. Trash matters. Volunteer. Suggestions include: Reduce! Share subscriptions. Take your own mug/water bottle. Buy in bulk, store in reusable containers. Car-pool. Reuse! Newspaper & phone books – clean windows, line litter boxes, mulch. Reuse glass bottles & jars to store bulk spices, cereal, flour, & grains. Reuse non #1 and 2 plastic containers for supplies and hardware, etc. Take Styrofoam peanuts to mailing services. Recycle! Use the city or county’s recycling programs. Curbside recycling is available to city residents and the county has over ten recycling centers. A little bit of effort can save a lot of money… YOUR money!
