The city of Newnan Animal Control Officer, Cyndi Hoffman reminds pet owners to spay and neuter your pets. Talk about preventive medicine! Removing the ovaries and uterus of a female dog or cat—otherwise known as spaying—helps prevent breast cancer and pyometra, or infection of the uterus, and stops the animal from going into heat. (Female cats, by the way, can go into heat every 3 weeks!) And ASPCA experts believe that many aggressive behavior problems can be avoided by neutering a male, or removing the testicles, by the age of six months. The surgery also prevents testicular cancer, prostate disease and hernias. Most importantly spaying and neutering a pet helps control pet populations and helps animals from being unwanted.
Keep Newnan Beautiful has learned that the old folk wisdom that says place a brick in your toilet’s water tank is partially correct! It’s an effortless way to save water, but a brick isn’t the best choice of object. Use a plastic bottle filled with water instead. Most toilets will flush perfectly well with a little less water (an increasingly scarce resource) and the average model uses three to seven gallons per flush. A bottle in the tank will displace enough water to save half a gallon to a gallon each use, or up to about 10 gallons a day in a typical home. All you have to do is drop a little sand or some pebbles into a bottle, fill it with water, and put it in the tank, making sure not to disturb the toilet’s working parts! The City’s Engineering Department would like to remind you those household hazardous wastes in and around your home can affect your family and pets and can be toxic to fish and wildlife. If disposed of improperly, an average Georgia household generates an estimated 20 pounds of household hazardous waste each year. That's a total of 62 million pounds- enough to fill 1,550 tractors every year! Georgia households waste approximately four gallons of paint each year.
