‘Newnan Notes’
By Gina Snider

Keep Newnan Beautiful embraces spring as we journey into the season of environmental volunteering. This season we challenge you to set your “green intention.” How do you plan to make a difference in your neighborhood/community/city this spring? Please consider adopting one of our city streets through our “Adopt A Street” program. Individuals, families, businesses, and civic groups are encouraged to participate. We ask that you pick up your adopted street a minimum of four times a year. Keep Newnan Beautiful will provide signs at either end of the adopted street recognizing your group. We also provide materials relative to cleanup, and arrange for trash pickup. Remember, no matter the scale of your clean-up participation, your individual effort makes a colossal difference! For more information about our Adopt-A-Street program and Keep Newnan Beautiful please visit our website at www.keepnewnanbeautiful.org, call Carol Duffey at 770-253-8283 or email

Spring and warmer weather is here! As a result, more citizens will be outside enjoying the city and walking. From the SafeSTEP Pedestrian Safety Campaign, here is a myth and fact for drivers. Myth: Speed limits are just suggestions. Fact: Speeding is the primary cause in 32% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes (NHTSA). Going the speed limit vs. just five miles an hour over the speed limit means the difference of being able to stop for a young child that darts out in the street vs. hitting and killing the child.
There was one new occupational tax certificate issued by the city. The business name is Early Bird Termite and Pest Control. For more information on tax occupational certificates or city taxes please contact the Finance Department at 770-253-2682.
The City of Newnan Animal Warden would like to request residents to put i.d. tags on their animals. In case your pet gets lost, it would be helpful to return the animal home if current tags are available on the pet. Please make sure that the tag has the current address and/or phone number. Also, if you have your pet micro-chipped PLEASE make sure the chip is registered with the manufacturer and that all registration information is current. If your pet is picked up with a current tag and/or chip and you answer the phone when called, animal will get a free ride home!
The Engineering Department would like to remind the public to avoid using too much fertilizer and chemicals on their lawns. Over fertilizing and overuse of chemicals can not only hurt lawns, but can damage the water quality. It can also damage our biological and aquatic habitats. Please continue to report hot spots, spills, clogged catch basins, illegal dumping and illicit connections and discharges into the street or storm drain systems to the City of Newnan Environmental Hotline at 770-253-1823.
