Keep Newnan Beautiful is holding its third annual Walk n ’Wag fundraiser this Saturday. It’s not too late to register! Registration is available online at active.com or at www.keepnewnanbeautiful.org. The one-mile walk will begin and end at the city part at Temple Avenue and Jackson Street. Walkers can participate with or without a dog. If you do not have a dog, the humane society will provide you with one to walk. Event day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:30, according to KNB Director Carol Duffey.  The one-mile route will take walkers and their dogs through downtown to the First Avenue Park and back to the Temple Avenue city park, where participants will be provided food and beverages. Water will be provided along the route for thirsty pooches.

“Come join us for a fun morning,” said Duffey. “A great walk with your dog is a perfect way to start your day.”

Vendors will be on hand with a variety of products catering to dogs and dog-lovers. Shopping opportunities include information on dog training, homemade doggie biscuits, dog apparel and dog adoptions. Onsite micro-chipping will be available for $20.00.  Pre-registration is $20.00 and on-site registration is $25.00. Participants will receive a T-shirt for themselves with an optional dog scarf, as well as food and beverages. Proceeds will be used to purchase additional pet waste stations for city parks. Duffey is hoping to raise enough funds to purchase and install at least two more pet stations. The city park along Temple Avenue had pet waste stations installed in the summer of 2009. Duffey reminds participants not to bring aggressive dogs or dogs that are in heat. All animals must be up to date with shots and remain on a leash. Owners will be expected to clean up after their pets. The event will be held rain or shine.  For more information please contact Carol Duffey at 770-253-8283, email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

The city of Newnan Animal Warden would like to tell you there is a valuable book called Pet Meets Baby. The book is available in a free download from American Humane Association (www.americanhumane.org/petmeetsbaby) to help families safely introduce a new baby or new child to a beloved pet, and a new pet to their children.

Too often, young families relinquish a pet when the first baby comes, fearing harm to an infant. But there are ways to prepare the pet for a safe introduction to children, and a gentle transition in a family’s attention when a new child takes center stage.

Pet Meets Baby can help keep families and pets together with practical tips for how to prepare the pet’s possible re-location to another room; how to encourage careful first introductions; how to understand when a pet becomes stressed; and what to do so that children and pets can grow up together and form strong bonds.
